59 PILL HILL LANE

59 Pill Hill Lane is the birthplace of the chocolate chip cookie.

In the early 1930’s, Ruth Graves Wakefield, owner of the Toll House Inn and inventor of the chocolate chip cookie, made her home at 59 Pill Hill Lane shortly after adopting her first child. Legend has it that she was brainstorming about cookie dough while returning from a vacation when she first came up with the chocolate chip cookie recipe, a variation of another popular treat called Butter Drop Do Pecan Icebox Cookies.

Her original plan was said to have involved melting squares of baker’s unsweetened chocolate and adding it to the blond batter. But, supposedly, the only chocolate she had available was a Nestlé® semi sweet bar, and she was too rushed to melt it. With an ice pick, she chopped the bar into bits and dribbled the pieces into the brown sugar dough with nuts.

The cookies proved to be such a scrumptious success that Ruth had no choice but to repeat the recipe. She called her new invention the “Chocolate Crunch Cookie” and published the recipe in several Boston and New England newspapers. Her cookbook, “Toll House Tried and True Recipes,” would become a kitchen mainstay. She eventually sold the recipe to Nestlé®, and today, the Nestlé® Toll House® Cookie Recipe is featured on the back of every bag of Nestlé® chocolate chips.

With rich history and palatial architectural heritage, this Gambrel Cape offers the ultimate in intimate waterfront living. 59 Pill Hill Lane was originally constructed in approximately 1745 and was known as the Joshua Thomas House. In recent years, an extensive two-story addition was completed, expanding the home to 8,600 square-feet on more than three acres. The residence has maintained its rich, period details, including warm pine paneling, wainscoting, and custom fielded fireplaces that serve to evoke a nostalgic appeal. Its romantic bayside setting offers unparalleled panoramic water views and privacy.

Today, the home features a custom pool and hot tub, private dock, nature trail with koi pond, osprey’s nest, and garage parking for 8 cars.
